The Best Horse Grooming Tools for Spring

Are you dreading the shedding season?

Let us help you prepare for spring shedding with some grooming tools and tips that will help make this process easier for you and your horse.

Every spring, when the days get longer, horses shed out their heavy winter coat and transform into their sleek summer coat.

It isn’t the weather that triggers this process, it’s the daylight over the course of a day, so as the days get longer, the coat starts to shed.

It’s an important process and to ensure optimal coat health, you can do some things to help your horse feel their best!

To help you stop dreading shedding, we’ve compiled a list of our Staff’s favourite grooming products that will help you and your horse shed out.

Check out our recommendations below to get started!

Standard Shedding Blade

At the top of everyone’s list is the standard shedding blade. This can come in many different forms, but when your horse is ready to shed out his coat, this is the easiest tool for the job. Sometimes they are serrated on one side, and flat on the other and can be used in a loop or straight. They take on many different shapes and aren’t always made from metal. The Epona Shed Flower is an excellent example of this. The Shed Flower is made from plastic and is slightly kinder than metal shedding blades.

It is highly durable and fits easily into the palm of your hand. The standard shedding blade has taken a modern turn in recent years. The Groom Ninja is a straight shedding blade that easily collects loose hair and is ergonomically friendly.

Caution should be taken though as they can cause discomfort to your horse in sensitive areas. This type of shedding tool is excellent for places like the rump, neck, and sides of the horse. Legs and faces should be avoided with this tool.

Grooming Block

Next on the list is a fibreglass grooming block. This tool can be used on the more sensitive areas of the horse. It is also ideal for the horse that has a shorter coat. The Farnam Slick ‘n Easy removes loose hair, dust and dirt. It will leave your horse’s coat slicker and shinier and aids in shedding out your horse’s winter coat.

The block sits nicely in your hand to help reduce fatigue.

Grooming Glove

If traditional brushes are hard for you to handle, or your horse is slightly skittish, The HandsOn Grooming Gloves is an excellent option. With the action of petting, you can effectively remove loose hair from your horse.

Removing the hair from the gloves is easy too! They are lightweight and extremely durable. Dogs and cats love them too!

Paddle Brush

One grooming tool you may not think of for shedding out your horse is the paddle brush. Easy to hold and collects a ton of hair, the paddle brush is an excellent tool to grab lots of hair at once. It’s also easy to remove hair from.

This type of brush is also perfect for manes and tails.

Curry Comb

Most grooming tools are multipurpose. Another excellent grooming tool that can be used to shed out your horse is the rubber curry comb. One of our favourites is the Tough-1 Great Grips Curry Comb with Handle.

The large rubber massagers help capture hair, and your horse gets a great massage while you remove loose hair. The rubber curry is a must-have for all grooming boxes.

Magic Brush

The Magic Brush or the Roma Miracle Brush is simply MAGIC! Without being rough, it's ideal for removing thick dried mud on coats, blankets, and even hooves. The easy to grip handle makes this brush comfortable to use, and the small size is perfect for children.

Tongue Groomer

Last but definitely not least, is the Epona Tigers Tongue Groomer. While this product may not be ideal for shedding, it deserves a mention on our top spring grooming tools list.

The Tigers Tongue Groomer is an excellent multi-purpose grooming tool. It has many uses, removing mud, scrubbing in the bath, cleaning water buckets, and even scrubbing gunk off bits.

Bathing Tools

Another way to stop dreading the shedding season is to bathe your horse. If you’re lucky and we get some warm days or you have a heated wash rack, bathing your horse is an excellent way to remove additional loose hair.

If you’re looking for a complete grooming set, the Horsware Ireland Rambo Newmarket Grooming Kit gives you an excellent base to start building your kit on. It even comes in its own colour coordinating bag.

So, if you’re looking to expand your grooming tools or start your very own grooming kit, these shedding tools are an excellent start.
